"It Takes Two": To The Moon

It's dusk when two teenage boys stand outside an abandoned lighthouse.

Gentle waves crash on the edge of the rocks they sit on shoeless.

BOY 1: It's getting dark. We should sail back home.

BOY 2: Don't worry. We'll have lights to guide us.

BOY 1: (sarcastically laughs) If you're talking about the stars, try to be a little more realistic about sailing.

BOY 2: Don't worry. Let's live in this moment before we sail back into our boring lives.

BOY 1: (sighs quietly and then chuckles) Alright.

BOY 2: (looks up and points) Hey, look! The moon's out.

Both of them stare at the moon silently and intently as darkness quickly takes over the sky.

They whisper to each other.

BOY 2: Imagine if the Earth's waters formed a wall.

BOY 1: Gee... That'd be one tall wall.

BOY 2: Imagine the both of us sailing up that wall.

BOY 1: Gee... That'd be phenomenal.

BOY 2: Imagine if we sailed towards the moon.

Stars appear in the sky, the waves grow, and the wind picks up.

They laugh.

BOY 1: That's some mission, Armstrong.

BOY 2: That'd be ground-breaking.

BOY 1: "Physics-breaking".

They laugh some more.

BOY 2: Let's say we're sailing towards the moon right now...

BOY 1: We can't look back! If we look back, we'd see the deepest, darkest corners of the Earth!

BOY 2: And we gotta sail with maximum horsepower so we don't fall to the bottom of the ocean!

BOY 2 laughs while BOY 1 wonders.

BOY 1: ...What's the point of sailing towards the moon if our boat's maximum horsepower isn't enough to get us there?

BOY 2: (chuckles) We'd be closer to the moon.

BOY 1: Close... but never there.

Silence takes over again.

Both of them look back at the moon.

BOY 2: We'll never land on the moon.

BOY 1: For sure.

BOY 2: And I'm okay with that.

BOY 1: Really?

BOY 2: Yeah, because the journey, the challenge, and the dream-chasing is thrilling enough.

BOY 1: For sure.

BOY 2: And we can still get closer to the moon.

BOY 1: You're dreaming of the impossible.

BOY 2: We can. We'll ride tall waves.

BOY 1: (smirks) Sounds exciting.

BOY 2: Let's make it happen.

BOY 1: Sure. When, where, and how?

BOY 2: Now... here... on the waves before us.

Both of them look down to find waves crashing below their knees.

Then they look back up at the starry, starry night.

BOY 1: Wow, I didn't realize how late it is now.

BOY 2: No, it's early.

BOY 1: Early?

BOY 2: Early for us to start our mission.

BOY 1: (chuckles) Let's do that mission before we sail back into our boring lives.

BOY 2: Sure. Let's.
